SKAT王MPIRE Rules Of The Road
Safe skating is a snap when you remember to SLAP!

1. Skate Smart

* Always wear your protective gearhelmet, wrist protection, elbow pads, knee pads
* Master the basicsstriding, stopping, and turning
* Maintain all of your equipment in a safe and proper working order

2. Skate Legal

* Obey all traffic regulations. When on skates, you should consider yourself to be subject to the same obligations as a bicyclist or a driver of an automobile

3. Skate Alert

* Skate under control at all times
* Watch out for road hazards
* Avoid water, oil, sand, etc
* Avoid heavy traffic

4. Skate Polite

* Skate on the left, pass on the right (United Kingdom Version)
* Announce your intentions by saying, "passing on your right" (United Kingdom Version)
* Always yield to pedestrians
* Be a goodwill ambassador for the sport

There are not any real rules to inline skating, but as with any sport, there are guidelines for common courtesy & good sportsmanship. Of course you should treat others skaters in the same way you would like to be treated. Beyond politeness, you should consider the following simple suggestions:

* Before you decide to skate near other people, make sure you have mastered turning & stopping. Not only is this a safety issue, but plowing into pedestrians & vehicles is not a very good stopping technique or way to make new friends.
* Also, when skating in the street, consider yourself to be subject to the same obligations as a cyclist or motor vehicle. Obey all traffic regulations, including stop signs & lights. Travel on the left & pass on the right (United Kingdom version), just as vehicles do & always announce your intentions yielding to those skating faster than you.
* Respect whatever surface you are skating on by picking up after yourself & any pets you might bring along. Nobody likes a litter bug. If you are skating on a rail-trail, try not to disturb any wildlife you may encounter.

If all else fails, just remember to S.L.A.P. The International Inline Skating Association (IISA) reminds you to skate Smart, Legal, Alert & Polite. Always wear protective gear, master the basics before you venture out & keep your equipment in working order. Check with your local council for guidelines governing pavement skating & adhere to them. Be aware of obstacles & skate at a reasonable speed. Most importantly, have fun!
